Freefalling Orbital Cold War - Session 11
Forgot to push this to publish it sooner, apologies.
The landers have some names now. The PC astronauts arrived on “Argo”. The PC cosmonauts arrived on a soviet lander, but the name is not actually decided yet.
Volkova is still not sleeping enough. Not quite awake for morning briefing.
Finding Frelong – Sanchez
Stan is unwilling to help Sanchez, too busy working on the bug-out base. NASA geologist, Bryan Floyd, is willing, but nervous about not having a cosmonaut along. Approaches Chemerkin, who agrees, but is a little odd.
Head to DLB-4 first. When getting close, Chemerkin suggests getting out while out of visual range of DLB-4, and is then doing a weird crawling, planking thing. Getting eyes on, one of the modules has a hole in the western side, no lights or bodies. A buggy and two MOLABs have been turned over and destroyed.
Looks suspiciously like anti-tank weapon damage, as we have seen in the testing a couple of months back.
Buggy might be Frelong’s? Sanchez wants to go and check it out, but is scared off by a potential sniper.
Chemerkin suggests that if Sanchez acts as bait, he can get in close and sort things out. This is him looking for revenge for something. He seems pretty confident here.
- While debating, Sanchez, Floyd and Chemerkin are captured by the soviets at DLB-4.
A handful of cosmonauts and military cosmonauts.
- The mission is successfully failed: Commander Matthew Frelong is also here. dramatic sting
Fixing Landers – Agramonte, Desjardin
Agramonte and Desjardin, along with Faris are looking at the landers: having something to get out with seems like a really good idea.
Agramonte cannibalises the broken hull’s radio to repair the comms system on the less damaged one. While testing radio, gets a bunch of weird noise.
- Seems to be an incomplete message from Houston
- Takes it in to Volkova who looks at things on the base radio.
- Can find messages at similar frequencies This is giving Agramonte some trauma flashbacks.
- Goes to the doctor and gets some drugs (just to get through the current crisis, honestly).
- This will have no downsides.
Desjardin attempts to refurbish battery on Inspiration.
Managed to do that, but battery is only charging to about 50% capacity
- Reduced endurance. Heat exchanger on Aquarius has been damaged.
Mechanic could weld them together
Engineering could look at designing a replacement
Cannibalise Argo
Remove thermal systems for base back-up.
Remove Argo’s to design a replacement, cross-referencing to inventory designs. Can make a pretty solid design, but again at reduced endurance in sunlight: about 10 days instead of 20.
- Should only take three days for rendezvous in lunar orbit.
- Seems to be working as designed.
Argo:
- Power, life support, fuel, all seem nominal.
- In addition to the systems screaming about the landing leg, flight controls are non-responsive.
- Conflicting status messages about what is actually wrong: not getting status or misaligned status.
- Could be computer glitch
- Flight computer itself is damaged in some way
- Getting status and not interpreting them correctly, falling back to default Will take a look next session, but plan is to start with the least annoying and complicated possibility.
- Conflicting status messages about what is actually wrong: not getting status or misaligned status.
